         (1) When an action was happening during a period of time in the past, we use "Past Continuous Tense".
當一個動作是在過去某一段時間中正在進行的，我們便用「過去進行式」。
For example 例如：

I was sleeping when my mother left home this morning.

; q! i# O1 L( w(2) When we change the verb into "Past Continuous Tense" form, we write the verb in the following ways:
/ l; H' A. H; o7 O# H! }( e3 E* h# z& Bwas / were + _______ing
當我們用「過去進行式」時，要把動詞寫成這樣子:
was / were + _______ing

5 L# O( R+ {8 @7 s  l( W(3) Usually, we use the "Past Continuous Tense" with the "Simple Past Tense" and we would use "when" or "while" to join the two actions in the sentence.

when + 短動作 (簡單過去式)
while + 長動作 (過去進行式)

(4) How to form questions and negative sentences in "Past Continuous Tense"?

Questions:
Were they playing when Dad came home?
Was Helen sleeping when her mother left home this morning?
Negative sentences:

Past Continuous Tense:

Past Continuous Tense + Simple Past Tense:
When the school bell rang, the children were running in the playground.
An apple fell on Tom's head while he was waiting at the bus stop.
